Add a car to your policy

This section will help you to tell us all we need to know in order to ADD A CAR to your policy.

  • If this car is REPLACING another car already insured by us, please use the Replacing A Car section.
  • If you are also adding a driver, please report the driver separately.

Here is how you can add a car to your policy....

When you go to the next screen, you will be asked:

  • a few questions so we can locate your policy information,
  • for a description of your new car (particularly the VIN number),
  • what coverages you want (see FAQ: What coverages are recommended)
  • who the principal driver will be (see FAQ: Principal versus Occasional Driver)
  • when the coverage should begin, and
  • if the car is being leased (we need the name of the lessor) or if it will have a loan against it (we need the name of the lienholder).

Have this information ready before you proceed.

Once you have submitted your information to us, you will receive the following:

  • immediate confirmation by E-mail that we have received your request to add the car to your policy.
  • your "pink" liability slip confirming coverage will be sent by regular mail
  • if a photograph is required, a list of the authorized locations will be sent by regular mail (see "Buying a used car" information below).

In a few weeks, your insurer will send you the following documents by regular mail:

  • an endorsement confirming that the change has been made
  • an invoice or new monthly payment schedule.

If you are buying or leasing the car from a dealer

Ask the dealer to send us the following documents by E-mail (clientservices@carinsurance.ca) or fax (416-907-5597):

  • a copy of the purchase or lease agreement
  • the form they require us to complete so that the car ownership can be properly registered.

We will fax the completed document back to the dealer, usually the same day as it is received by us. (we can't E-mail it as it needs a signature)

If you are buying the car privately

Send us a copy of the bill of sale by E-mail (clientservices@carinsurance.ca) or fax (416-907-5597): Be sure to include your name and policy number.

When registering the change in car ownership at the motor vehicle licensing office, use your current policy number and insurance company because we will add the new car to your existing policy.

If you are buying a used car

The provincial automobile insurance legislation requires you to have the car photographed at an authorized location WITHIN 10 DAYS OF THE START OF COVERAGE. This requirement applies IN MOST SITUATIONS. We will tell you if it applies to you and where this can be done. There is no cost to you. We regret the inconvenience, but it's the law!

IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES, YOU MUST TELL US ABOUT THE CAR OR IT WILL NOT BE INSURED.
